John — who composed many of the songs for Disney's 1994 original — spoke about the 2019 reboot in a new interview with GQ, calling the film a "disappointment" and said that the studio "messed the music up."
"Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn't have the same impact," he said. "The magic and joy were lost. The soundtrack hasn't had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago, when it was the bestselling album of the year. The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly."
For those who don't remember, the 2019 soundtrack featured re-recorded versions of songs from the original sung by cast members like Beyoncé and Donald Glover, as well as some brand new cuts like "Spirit" (and even a full Beyoncé companion album).
John didn't stop there, though. He went on to say that he believes that Lady Gaga is "the only real star" of this generation — despite cozying up to Beyoncé at The Lion King premiere earlier this year.
Naturally, the Beyhive isn't too pleased with John's recent comments. See some of their backlash below.
Well Elton John came for Beyoncé.I guess we all know who's next to be sacrificed right before the B7 Tour..!! pic.twitter.com/mwfmD94eS9— Hive With Taste 🐝 (@DustinWill29) October 16, 2019
And Lady Gaga? She wishes that she had the cultural impact that Beyoncé worked over 20 years for. Lady Gaga, with all due respect, is a gimmick. Elton can have her. The rest of us have Beyoncé and Rihanna.— Natasha (@natashalvb) October 16, 2019
Sir Elton John, I can respect your opinion about The Lion King remake, however, leave Beyoncé and her music for the film out of it pic.twitter.com/2HDuRCLwF2— Lex (@Up2Lex) October 16, 2019

Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé. Elton John has a problem with Black successful people. I knew there was something I didn't like about him pic.twitter.com/je2IZGxtny— Reggie's Music Lists (@HiveMusicLists) October 15, 2019
So Elton John opened the floodgates for the racist yt people to use "it didn't capture the original magic" as a thinly veiled excuse for their hate of Beyoncé due to her being her and black.— KUNT EATSWOOD (@KUNTEATSWOOD) October 16, 2019
elton john started a new wave of hate for the lion king after it grossed $1.7B. and most of the people who are criticising are white, blaming Beyoncé when her song was the only song that charted. thank God she created her own sountrack. pic.twitter.com/hseaqwbfU5— shen. Elton John said the new Lion King's music wasn't that good to him and the beyhive started posting a pic of him getting his butt hole cleaned with a vacuum like machine. Some of Beyonce's fan base is the ghetto.— chloe 🥀 (@fXOrever) October 16, 2019
