Published Oct 29, 2020David Gordon Green's Halloween Kills isn't coming out this year, but the director is giving us a consolation prize of sorts. He's turning John Carpenter's classic tale of a knife-wielding maniac into a children's book.
The upcoming book is called The Legend of Halloween, and the illustrated story is co-written by Green alongside fellow filmmaker Onur Tukel, who also illustrated the book. Malek Akkad and Ryan Freimann — producer and executive producer of Green's 2018 Halloween film and forthcoming sequels — are overseeing the production.
The source material for the book, though, comes directly from the original 1978 horror flick by John Carpenter and Debra Hill. So despite this looking very much like a cute kids book, get ready for Michael Myers and, most likely, one hell of a bodycount.
The official synopsis for The Legend of Halloween reads as follows:
The Legend of Halloween follows Michael Myers, a little boy who, after doing terrible things grows up in an institution. Now grown, Michael escapes for a night of mischief and terror back in his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois. From artists and authors David Gordon Green and Onur Tukel comes an imaginative illustrated retelling of the 1978 horror-film classic, originally written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill.
In a statement, Green said, "Joining this iconic franchise has been one of the most fulfilling artistic endeavours of my career. With this new chapter, we hope to share our own love for Halloween with a new generation of horror fanatics."
Tukel added: "I saw the original Halloween when I was about nine years old and it scared the wits out of me. I've seen it about 50 times since then and it continues to be my favourite horror film. The mask, the music, the indelible characters, the monologues of pure evil — to me it's cinematic perfection. Collaborating with David on a children's book adaptation of Halloween has been demented and surreal, kind of like being simultaneously possessed by Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein and the demon Pazuza."
The Legend of Halloween will arrive via Further Front Publishing, with the book set for release in mid-November. You can now pre-order The Legend of Halloween.
As previously reported, Halloween Kills will now arrive on October 15, 2021, while Halloween Ends is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2022.
